In the early 1980s, PNOC-EC conducted geological surveys, including regional areial photography, field mapping, sampling, and data arrangement on the Visayan basin for the first time. The survey performed aimed at determining boundaries of the different formations, establishing a tectonic framework for South Cebu, evaluating reservoir characteristics of the Maingit Formation and the potential of source rocks in the Alegria and Malabuyoc area.

In 1983 acquired 40 lines of onshore 2D seismic data with relative poor quality. But the offshore 2D seismic data of 11 lines, 686km was acquired with medium quality in grids of 6X8km In 1980.

From 1960 to 1990, 37 wells have been drilled in the Southern Cebu onshore area, among which, 36 wells distributed in the Western Structural Belt and 1 well in the Central Structural Belt. The depth of most wells in the Alegria and Malabuyoc anticlines was less than 1000m and 12 wells had various oil and gas flows. 9 oil wells, 8-141bbl/d, 3 gas wells, 0.007-1mmscf/d. The production layer is Maingit clastic sandstone.
